The only reason I did not own an original Mini is I opted for an Odyssey at the time. The Minitaur is a true Moog. I make hip-hop beats and ambient doodlings, primarily. I didn’t compare to the others but most things I read online said the bass is the strongest on the minitaur. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THE MOOG SUB PHATTY. The filter behaves differently with the overload, oscillator wave shaping works a thousand times better and tonality is little bit more pleasant for me. Slim/Little, have a great interface - the knobs available have a distinct led feedback and you always know where you are live. Minitaur–great, pure sound; CV mapping; not as flexible, but what it does it does really, really well. Keep in mind, my Minitaur just arrived the other day, so I may not have the fullest report here. Of note I have owned a SP and wasn't overly impressed with SubBass and have a SE-1X which covers similar territory to the Voyager on paper. Especially if you’re heading for a Mother-32. I think it has a modern character and it needs to be explored by more people without that freaking multidrive function cranked up all the time. For bass sounds, there’s no doubt - Minitaur is king (clearly heard even from videos). One thing that you should be afraid is the current quality control for the Sub line - I see a lot of people with problems that didn’t exist before, mainly with erratic potentiometers. When people talk a lot about Moog, they tend to talk about the “classic Moog ladder filter,” and, indeed, the filter does sound great and the resonance is perhaps the most predictable–wild when you want it to be wild, harmonic when you want it to be harmonic–of any synth I own. If you want the most Moog for the money go for the Sub37, because it comes close to the Voyager and has some nice aces up it’s sleeve, which the Voyager misses. A 37 key would be way better. To give you an idea of the types of sounds that the Sub Phatty has to offer it comes with 16 presets that range … the psychoacoustics-approach is interesting. I think if you tried out the Sub Phatty, you would come back and say, "Glad I got ALL THREE!". Prophet 6 as well for polyphony. The Slim and Little are discontinued, but you might get a good price for them - remember that the Little also has 37 keys. The Sub line is the more versatile and would grant you a lot of crazy sonic capabilities - I wouldn’t even consider paying more for the extras in the Sub 37 though. Is the bass that much stronger? The patent has expired quite a while ago and there are manufacturers using the same ladder filter in their products. layering minitaur with the sub 37, getting the Sub all squelchy or coarse and the Mtr doing sub will get you the lead / bass solo sound of your dreams, setting the pitchbend amountof the Sub high and the Mtr to something less or off in the down direction gets … The arp, the sequencer, the looping ADSRs and the easy and direct modulation assessment of almost every modulation source via the front panel makes it a great studio and live performance instrument. It’s great–and the filter sounds fantastic–but I’m not great with a soldering iron, and I wanted more control than it offered. If money is even tighter, you can get almost all the way there with a MIDI keyboard controller and the Moog Minitaur, but trust us, once you fall for the Sub Phatty, you’ll be hooked. The Minitaur on the other hand has zero keys, which is good or bad, depending if you want to use the combo standalone or not (A4 + Moog). I reckon minitaur and sub 37 would be knobby heaven together. I’m not sure, but it doesn’t sound as clean as the Minitaur to my ears. On a thread a while back I read that for some hardware related reasoning that the Minitaur actually has a deeper fatter bass than the voyager (if true, Wow). For relatively little money you get a real moog with a real moog sound. Have minibrute and microbrute but use them for basic analog sounds. The ultimate moog bass is the MiniMoog. But for me, the reason I wanted a Moog had to do with the combination of the oscillators and that filter. All of this is subjective beyond the point that a spectral/oscilloscope analysis of Moog vs. Novation oscillators would likely show some differences; what we make of those differences is up to us. But for bass in my experience the more complex the waveform gets the more pressure it looses (not just on the moog). I think the Subphatty could be the answer. If you can make an argument for why one might partner better with a Mother–again, CV mapping seems a plus here–please let me know. They all sound good to me, but there is some silky magic about the Slim/Little phatties that I have not found on the Sub or 37. It is capable of doing almost everything the Sub 37 does (besides extra LFO and duophony) and is way cheaper… it also sounds the same as a Sub 37. The keys on that thing are amazing, especially for the price. However, the Sub 25 may be better seen as a successor to the Sub Phatty. Both oscillators have variable waveshapes for added character. Unfortunately, when we had a look at the Sub Phatty, the editor was still in development. The digital controls over several parameters makes it a more capable machine, with repeatable envelopes, LFO keytracking and a few other cool treats such as phase resetting for oscillators, just like you get from the Minitaur.
